ACTS is a unique instrument tailored to the needs of the Broadcast and Land Mobile Radio Engineer or Technician. It replaces an Audio Analyzer (THD Analyzer), Dynamic Signal Analyzer, Function Generator, Oscilloscope, and TIMS. It provides simple setup and advanced features to support LMR analog simulcast systems.

The Audio Communication Test Set (ACTS) provides accurate, calibrated measurement and generation of audio signals, with 2 independent input and 2 independent output channels. Several features directly support the optimization of simulcast Land Mobile Radio communication systems. Functionality includes the following:

Level & Frequency (similar to a TIMS)

Audio Generator / Function Generator

ACTS is a portable test instrument housed in an all metal enclosure and is designed for use at RF sites with its’ excellent RF shielding. Control and display of measurement data is performed on a user supplied Personal Computer (PC) with a Windows™ based software application. Connection between the PC and ACTS is by USB.

The ACTS input hardware contains two identical differential input amplifiers, filters, calibrated 16-bit Analog to Digital Converters, and support circuitry. Output hardware consists of two calibrated 12-bit Digital to Analog Converters, output amplifiers, and support circuitry. Output waveforms include sine, square, sawtooth, triangle, and noise.

High accuracy, calibrated converters and circuitry are used to acquire the analog signal. PC sound cards do not provide calibrated levels which is a requirement for the applications this instrument was designed for. The measurement funtions are performed in software, on a PC. This architecture is extremely flexible and is reflected in the breadth of measurements ACTS is capable of.

The ACTS software application is meant to be simple to setup and use. For example, the FFT analyzer has only 2 needed adjustments; Span and Resolution. Gone is the need to select windowing, lines of resolution, record length, or averaging.
